Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Youth with single-sided deafness often have learning difficulties and behavioral problems because of the inability to perform in noisy environments. However, studies show that hearing aids that are surgically implanted in the skull bone have been found to noticeably improve the situation.

Traditional hearing aids can help as well, improving comprehension and performance. But a traditional hearing aid can often get frustrating for a child with single-sided deafness to deal with.

Video Games Could be Cause of Future Hearing Loss

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Children and many young adults have been increasing the amount of time spent playing video games.  The time has increased dramatically over the last few years, with many people spending multiple hours a day playing video games.  Many professionals fear that playing video games could lead to hearing loss in the future.

It has been reported that many individuals will either sit too close to a television screen or will have a video game too loud when playing.  These two factors combined together could lead to future hearing loss for many individuals.

In general,  it is recommended to keep the sound as low as possible to help protect hearing.

Wisconsin Hearing Aid Bill Signed by Governor

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The Governor of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle, has signed a bill that will make private health insurance groups provide treatment for children with hearing problems.  The bill makes private insurance groups responsible for covering the costs of hearing devices for many children and the cost of cochlear implants in some cases.

The Governor has said that this treatment program can help save money in the long run with families by providing treatment early. Further,  this bill makes it possible for low-income families to afford some of the more expensive hearing treatments for their children.  Many people also believe that this will allow children to have  the opportunity for better development of speech and hearing skills.
