Frogs Discovered That May Help Hearing Aid Technology

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Researches and scientists at UCLA have discovered a new species of frog that may provide important data for future research into noise and hearing.

The frogs that were discovered communicate with each other through ultra-sonic calls.  The calls are ultra-sonic and can not be heard by the human ear.  The frogs were discovered on the island of Borneo. The calls were developed as an evolutionary adaption for the frogs to communicate near their natural habitat which is located near a loud and flowing river.

Scientists believe that the research on the communication techniques of the frogs could then be applied to real-world technologies.  Improvements in hearing aids could result from the discovery of this frog species.

Hearing Aids May Help Tinnitus

Friday, May 8th, 2009

A survey was recently conducted, and it was found that the use of hearing aids may help those who suffer from the symptoms of tinnitus. Tinnitus is a condition where the ears ring.  For some individuals it occurs only occasionally, for others it can be constant.

It was found in the survey that some individuals reported relief of their tinnitus symptoms when using a hearing aid.  This has been determined to be for a variety of reasons.  One of the most important reasons is that a hearing aids help an individual to better communicate.  The ability to communicate means that the individual will likely be less frustrated with the condition, so will less likely notice it.  Another reason is that hearing aids can amplify background noises, which can make tinnitus not noticeable.

Many Refuse Wearing Hearing Aids

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

A new study has been released that has some interesting results.  The study asked many people with hearing loss problems.  Of the 700 people asked,  it was found that 65% of the people believe that their hearing problems is affecting their quality of life.

One of the most surprising findings was that 1 in 10 people refuse to wear a hearing aid, even if they need one.  One of the main factors of this is some believe a stigma may be attached to the use of a hearing aid. This is unfortunate, because many modern hearing aids offer many advantages and are hardly noticeable.
