What is Meniere’s Disease?

One common source of hearing problems is a condition known as Meniere’s Disease, which was first described by the French doctor Prosper Meniere in 1861. Sadly, despite the efforts of audiologists who have researched this condition, little is known about why it occurs or how it can be cured. Like any condition that affects hearing, Me´nie`re’s Disease can interrupt your daily routine and negatively impact your quality of life.

If you have experienced any changes in hearing, or other symptoms such as vertigo or tinnitus, you need a full hearing exam from a qualified audiologist. To find licensed hearing experts in your area, call HearingPlanet today at 1-800-432-7669.

Causes of Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s Disease is associated with an abnormality of a part of the inner ear called the labyrinth. This includes the cochlea (which converts vibrations caused by soundwaves into signals to the brain) and the semicircular canals (which control balance and a sense of bodily motion). Meniere’s Disease may result when the balance of fluids contained in the labyrinth is interrupted by a blockage or rupture; researchers are still unsure of this condition’s exact causes.

Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease

This condition is usually found in only one ear. Some people experience symptoms on a daily basis, while others have “attacks” as rarely as once a year. The most common symptoms include:

  • A feeling of pressure or “fullness” in the affected ear
  • Hearing loss (which is usually temporary but can become permanent over time)
  • Vertigo (a sense of dizziness and imbalance)
  • Tinnitus (a ringing, buzzing, or other sound with no external cause)

These symptoms usually last for two to four hours at a time, although this can vary.

Seeking Help

Anyone who may be suffering from this debilitating condition needs to find qualified medical help. While there is no cure for Me´nie`re’s Disease, many of its sufferers have found ways to successfully manage their symptoms. Medication, changes in diet, and certain surgical procedures can bring great relief. For some people with this condition, hearing aids may also be necessary to cope with lasting damage to their ears’ hearing cells.
