Treating Ear Wax Buildup
If you have been experiencing a hearing impairment, there are many different conditions that may be to blame. Sometimes hearing loss is an irreversible consequence of aging or frequent exposure to loud noises. On the other hand, sometimes treating it is as simple as removing excess ear wax.
Because hearing loss can be associated with so many different conditions, it is important to consult a medical professional about the issue. HearingPlanet can help you locate a licensed audiologist in your area, answer your questions about hearing health, and inform you about helpful hearing technology. Clean Ears Work Better
Ear wax, or cerumen, is a natural secretion that helps to protect the ears from bacteria and other potential threats. However, when it builds up in the ear, it can block sound waves from entering the inner ear and create hearing impairment. Researchers have not yet determined why some people are prone to this problem while others are not.
If your ears are blocked by ear wax, you may want to try treating the problem at home. This is usually a fairly simple process:
- Soften the wax with an over-the-counter product. Your doctor can recommend a helpful one. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully, as not all of these products are used in the same way.
- Flush your ear with warm water. Most drug stores sell plastic bulbs with thin stems that can be used for this purpose.
- Dry your ear with a clean towel, or a blow dryer on a low setting. You may have to repeat the process a few times to fully clean out your ears.
If the cerumen in your ears is too impacted to be removed this way, or if your hearing loss persists even after its removal, you need to make an appointment with a qualified audiologist.
