Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

The human ear is a very fine-tuned instrument, with the ability to pick up on many variations and frequencies of sound. Unfortunately, this sensitivity can also make our ears vulnerable to damage when exposed to very loud or long-lasting noises. Noise-induced hearing lose (NIHL) is one of the most common causes of hearing impairment, as well as one of the most preventable.

Hearing loss of any kind can be an exasperating problem. If you have been experiencing changes in your level of hearing, it may be time to seek professional treatment. To learn more about skilled audiologists in your area, affordable hearing loss solutions, and more, call HearingPlanet’s network of hearing aid specialists at 1-800-432-7669.

How Does NIHL Happen?

Researchers believe that the root of NIHL lies in the vibrations of small bones in the ear known as ossicles. These bones vibrate in response to sound waves, causing the vibrations to pass into the cochlea where they stimulate small sensory cells called hair cells. When these vibrations are too strong, they can damage these hair cells, impairing their ability to send information about sound to the brain. Sadly, this damage can be permanent.

NIHL Risk Factors

Noise-induced hearing loss can be the product of one traumatically loud noise, such as an explosion, or a gradual problem that develops over time. You may be at risk for developing NIHL if you:

  • Work around loud tools or machinery
  • Frequently listen to headphones, a stereo, or a television at very high volumes
  • Often attend very loud concerts or other events
  • Have been exposed to gunshots or other loud, sudden noises
  • Enjoy a hobby that involves loud vehicles, such as snowmobiles or motorboats

If any of these apply to you, talk to your doctor about ways to protect your ears. You can also call our experienced hearing health consultants to learn about hearing impairment and its solutions.

Testimonial

Dear Grant,

I just want to thank you again for the absolutely excellent level of support you have provided to me in my search for hearing aids. As you know, when I called, I really was only gathering information and had no intention on committing to purchase any time in the immediate future. However your friendly one-on-one support with my questions, concerns and possible issues quickly won me over to make you and HearingPlanet my first choice as a provider...

Best Regards,
