Know Your Hearing Aid Rights
As a hearing aid user, it is important to know your rights so that you can speak up if you suspect fraud or other forms of mistreatment. Federal law secures certain rights for you, such as:
- The choice to undergo a physical exam before purchasing a hearing aid. If you are over 18, you can waive this right. However, it is illegal for hearing aid companies to coerce you into waiving it, or try to convince you that it is unimportant.
- Access to information about your hearing aid. The device should come with a brochure detailing its proper use and care. It should also include information about repairs and resources that can help you cope with problems that may arise.
- Protection from fraud. If a hearing aid company gives you incorrect information about the effectiveness of its products, their warranties, trial periods, or refunds, you may file a complaint with the FTC.
Many states have additional regulations for hearing aid sales. Your state's Attorney General's office should be able to refer you to organizations that can explain these regulations.
