Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids
Conductive hearing loss is associated with a problem in the middle ear that prevents sound waves from being correctly transmitted to the receptor cells of the inner ear. Conventional hearing aids are often an effective treatment for this; however, they are not right for everyone. Some people benefit more from the use of an implantable device known as a bone-anchored hearing aid.
If you are suffering from hearing loss, there are many different accessories available today that could benefit you. HearingPlanet can help you learn about a variety of hearing aids, answer your questions about today's technology, and refer you to a skilled audiologist in your area. How Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids Work
The purpose of a conventional hearing aid is to magnify sound waves entering the middle ear. This causes the small bones there (known as ossicles) to vibrate more intensely, providing stronger stimulus for the receptor cells of the inner ear. Unfortunately, this system may not be effective for people who suffer from certain difficulties, such as:
- Chronic infections or allergies that rule out wearing an earpiece
- Bone abnormalities that prevent the ossicles from vibrating correctly or vibrating at all
- A poorly formed, overly small, or missing ear canal
A bone-anchored hearing aid bypasses these problems through the use of a small titanium piece that is implanted behind the ear, partially exposed above the skin. A device called a sound processor is then attached to the exposed part. The sound processor acts like a typical hearing aid, picking up sound through a microphone and amplifying it.
What makes a bone-anchored hearing aid unique is that it passes vibrations through the skull and directly to the inner ear, rather than through the middle ear. This allows people with impairments of the middle ear to enjoy a convenient and effective solution.
